Forth Class – 23/24

West Cork Secret was the destination for the 3rd and 4th class school tour this year. The children had an incredible day full of games, challenges and a lot of mud!!

‘Smiley Eily!’

We had a visit from ‘Smiley Eiley’, the friendliest of dentists! She gave us some really worthwhile information about healthy eating and caring for our teeth.

It’s election time!!!

We recently received a visit from Mayor of cork County, Mr. Frank O’Flynn on the run up the recent local and European elections.

Congratulations to all the boys and girls who took part in this year’s Cork City Sports. They have done our school very proud!!

A huge congratulations from all of 4th class to Aoibhinn O’Leary, who recently won Keniry’s Easter colouring competition and scooped this wonderful prize!! Aoibhinn was so generous and shared her yummy bunny with our class today in school!!

Our Performance at Conna Creche

Last week, 4th class visited the pupils of Conna Community Childcare and performed for them! We sang songs, played instruments, céilí danced, recited nursery rhymes and our Scór ballad group performed sang their beautiful ballad songs also. It was a wonderful visit, enjoyed by pupils big and small! Thanks to Martina, Theresa and the creche staff for providing treats on the day and allowing our 4th class pupils to re-live their playschool days with a visit to the playground!…….which they absolutely loved!!!

The science of Rainbows!

In science this week we learned about the science of RAINBOWS! We learned about how light is REFRACTED through rain droplets and is split into the colours of the rainbow. We used a glass PRISM to make our own rainbows in the classroom. The prism separated the light from a torch into its seven colours!

The Easter bunny paid a visit to 4th class! Everyone was delighted with their Easter eggs.

PE- Wall sits!!

We put our backs to the wall at PE time for a test WALL SITS! There were some tired and wobbly legs by the time we were finished!!

St. Patrick’s day art

4th class danced the Walls of Limerick in the school Ceilí today! ☘️

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing 4th class Mammy’s. The pupils put so much time and effort into making their Mother’s Day art meaningful to their own Mam! Here are just a few samples of the amazing work that was created!

We have been very busy practicing for Scór na bPáistí lately. All of our entrants have tried their best and practiced really hard. Best of luck to you all! You deserve great success!!

Bricks 4Kidz

We had a busy morning with the Bricks Club creating some race cars and mosaic images!

4th class typed up their creative writing stories on the Chrome books today.

4th class made beautiful heart shaped pinch pots for Valentine’s Day.

Chinese new year

Happy Chinese New Year! The Chinese New Year was celebrated on the 10th of February 2024 and was marked by 2 weeks of celebrations in China! 2024 is the year of the Dragon. We learned lots about the Chinese New Year and its traditions and customs.

We made some delicious pancakes from scratch in class today!

With the Open Night happening in school, Fourth class were having a look back at their Junior Infant memory book. Lots of memories and stories were shared.

Fourth class joined hundreds of other schools around the country in a special St.Brigid’s Day Webinar. They listened to tales of St.Brigid and learned how to make a St.Brigid’s day cross.

4th class have been learning to play ‘Oh When the Saints’ on tin whistle to celebrate the Saint Catherine’s Junior team. They are playing in the All Ireland on Saturday in Croke Park! Best of luck Saint Catherine’s!!

4th class made some personalised Christmas baubles this week. They decorated our classroom windows beautifully with them.

Christmas Lanterns

We were busy this week putting the finishing touches to our Christmas Lanterns. We used glass paint to create a stained glass effect using our favourite colours.

pyjama Day!

Today we had a well earned treat day following our Christmas play and a whole term of working really hard! We had a pyjama and movie day with plenty of treats along the way!!

Songs practice for Christmas day Mass

We put in plenty of practice singing songs for Mass in Conna church on Christmas Day.

st. catherie’s abú!

We were treated to a visit from St. Catherine’s team at Conna Hall. Some of our pupils were lucky enough to have family members on the team! We are so proud of how well the team have done so far and we wish them all the best in their next match in Galway!!!

A beautiful winter wonderland created by fourth class this week. Some pupils got very creative with their snowflakes!

Fourth class wrote some excellent Christmas poems this week!

Who has the Xmas Factor?? Fourth class certainly do! They put in an incredible performance in their Christmas play last week. We were so proud of each and every one of the children. We hope you all enjoyed the show as much as we did!

We practised long and hard for our Christmas Play- The Xmas Factor………..we cannot wait to perform it on stage for real!!

monty’s pass- A famous local horse!

As part of our local history studies, we learned about a very famous local horse called Monty’s Pass who won the 2003 Aintree Grand National. We watched the video of the race and cheered him on 20 years after his famous win!!

Science- Combustion

This week in Science, we observed the process of burning (combustion). We observed how a burning candle in a jar extinguishes after a number of seconds due to a lack of Oxygen. We also observed the same experiment this time with the burning candle set in a bowl of water. We watched how the burning candle draws water upwards to fill the vacuum created by the oxygen which was used during combustion.

4th class were testing out a variety of materials to investigate which would be best to use as a teabag.

During Science week 4th class completed a STEM paper chain challenge. Using one sheet of paper they were challenged to make the longest paper chain possible. Once we found the winning paper chain we then decided to join the chains together outside to see how long they were. Measuring about 35 metres our paper chain nearly went the full length of the yard!

4th class created some magnificent Haunted houses as part of a Halloween project. These show the huge creativity and imagination in the class.

Purple and Yellow day!

UP THE SAINTS!

4th Class were all dressed up in purple and yellow last Friday, to show their support for the St. Catherine’s teams playing in various finals over the last fortnight.

Science- Materials and Change

This week in science, we examined materials and their characteristics. We tested a number of materials to see which of them were waterproof or not. We tested tissue paper, card, paper plates, tin foil and cling film. We chatted about the types of materials which might be good for making jerseys with. Then we designed jerseys of our own!!

We had fun making decorations to cheer on Catherine’s at the weekend!!

Making butter

This week, we learned how to make butter from cream! We put some cream into a small container with a lid on and shook, shook, shook!!! We checked inside our containers every few minutes and watched as our cream turned into butter!

Movement Breaks

Today it was raining so we caught up on our steps by having a movement break indoors instead!

An Fiaclóir

Rinne na páistí i rang a ceathair dráma Gaeilge i ngrúpaí. Bhí said ag dul go dtí an fiaclóir sa dráma. Bhain siad an-taitneamh as an gceacht seo.

Storm Agnes!

In artwork this week we sought our inspiration from Storm Agnes who came to visit on Wednesday while we were at school!!

Conna Show

This week we were super busy this week getting our entries ready for Conna Horticultural Show!!

The Rugby World Cup!

Rugby World cup fever has taken hold in 4th class! Each of our 20 pupils got to select one of the 20 teams in this year’s Rugby World Cup (teams were pulled from a hat). The children used the chrome books to research their chosen country/team. We’re all cheering for Ireland of course!!

Rainy Day Fun

Fourth class tested out some of our new board games and construction toys. These will keep everyone entertained during rainy winter lunchtimes!
