We did ‘Food Dudes’ last week! We tasted different fruit and vegetables every day. On Friday, we got a lunch box to take home. This week we have been bringing in our own fruit and veg. Our food dudes monitors have been recording all of the fruit and veg on our wall chart.

In history we have been learning about the Land of Saints and Scholars. We read about Monasteries in Ireland and we looked at Ogham Stones. Then, we wrote our names on Ogham Stones!

In maths this week we have been learning all about ‘Length’. We used our meter sticks and trundle wheels to measure the length and width of the playground. We also did a lot of measuring in our classroom!

On Wednesday we had our final swimming lesson in Youghal. We really enjoyed the eight weeks of swimming. We got to use the slide on our last day!!

On Tuesday we visited Conna Nursing Home. We recited a poem as well as a special prayer for Lent. Our instrumental group played a few tunes and we even had a couple of dances from the girls. We really enjoyed chatting to the residents and showing off our talents.

the scientific method
Last week we learned about the Scientific Method! We came up with a question ‘Does sugar dissolve faster in warm or cold water?’ Then, we engaged in some research, made a hypothesis and designed and carried out the experiment. We concluded that sugar dissolves faster in warm water as heat speeds up the process of dissolving. It was very important that our test was fair and accurate. The only variable that we changed was the temperature of the water.

We have been learning about Revolutions in America, France and Ireland. We were particularly interested in the Boston Tea Party which happened in 1773. We wrote newspaper articles explaining what had happened that night when the Sons of Liberty invaded British boats and threw 1 million pounds worth of tea over-board!

This week we started our mini-projects on Italy! We have learned about Italy’s culture, food, climate, agriculture and tourism. We are also learning about the Renaissance in History.

We have started the genre of ‘Explanation Writing’ in English. We have been using the Chromebooks to research our writing.
friction
This week we learned about the force of friction and how it is created. We investigated the length of time it took a toy car to travel down a ramp with different surfaces (bubble wrap, tinfoil, tea towel and a textbook.) We concluded that the car travelled the fastest down the textbook as it was a smooth surface. The car took the longest time to travel down the bubble wrap as it was rough, causing friction to occur.

We spent a lot of time this week learning about Christmas advertisements and how they influence the consumer. Specifically, we looked at Aldi’s Christmas advertisements with Kevin the Carrot. We examined and compared these advertisements from 2016 to 2023. Then, we came up with our own ideas for the Kevin the Carrot advertisement for 2024!

Today we visited Conna Nursing home. We performed ‘This Little Light of Mine’ and ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ as a whole class. Our trad group played ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Away in a Manger.’ The song ‘Grace’ was also performed as well as ‘When I Play for the County.’ We really enjoyed performing for the residents and chatting to them. We were very grateful for the selection boxes we got!!

olympic movement breaks
The Olympic Movement Breaks are a series of 20 short videos led by Olympians and High-Performance athletes demonstrating fun exercises and activities that students of all abilities can do. The short videos, across a variety of different sports including athletics, boxing, rugby sevens, swimming, breakdancing, and para powerlifting help generate classroom-based movement opportunities. We are really enjoying these movement breaks!

We made these snowmen to sell at the Christmas Market in Conna on December 3rd. We love how they turned out!
coloured flowers experiment
We carried out this investigation by placing white flowers in jars with plain water and with coloured water. After a couple of hours we noticed that the petals of the flowers in the dyed water were turning red. This is because plants take up water through the roots and they carry it to the stems.

egg in vinegar experiment
It is Science Week this week in school! On Tuesday we did this ‘Egg in Vinegar’ experiment. We had to leave the egg for 24 hours to see what would happen to it! Today we noticed that the egg expanded over night. The shell of the egg also disintegrated as the acid in the vinegar broke down the calcium carbonate in the egg shell. The egg was even bouncy! We used a ruler to measure different heights to drop it from! Eventually the egg broke.

Today we learned all about ‘All Souls Day’. We chatted about people in our lives who have passed away and how important it is to pray for them. Then, we decorated these candles for our Holy Space.

London suffered terribly during World War Two. The Blitz refers to the period of time when frequent bomb attacks became part of life in London. The Blitz lasted from September 1940 to May 1941. We used this image of St. Paul’s Cathedral to inspire our art-work.

The three angles of a triangle..
Today we learned that the three angles in a triangle always add up to 180 degrees. We even tested this out by cutting out the three angles of a triangle and putting them in a straight line. We know this is accurate because a straight angle is 180 degrees!
lava lamps
Today we made ‘Pumpkin Lava Lamps!’ We watched the citric acid and sodium bicarbonate from the alka seltzer tablets mix to form carbon dioxide and sodium citrate. The bubbles of carbon dioxide carried the coloured water into the oil giving the lava lamp effect. We also noticed that water and oil do not mix!

This week we completed the first drafts of our animal reports in our copies. Then, we published them on fancy paper.
heat experiement
In Science this week we have been learning all about the transfer of heat by conduction, convection and radiation. Today we carried out an experiment to identify which materials are good conductors of heat. We put a small amount of butter on a wooden spoon, metal spoon and a plastic spoon. We placed the three spoons in warm water. We looked closely to see which spoon of butter melted first. We concluded that metal is a good conductor of heat because the butter on the metal spoon melted first. We also identified wood as a good insulator of heat as the wooden spoon prevented the heat from passing through it.

Today we started the research stage of report writing. First we went through an exemplar called “The Red Squirrel.” We highlighted and coded it by classification, description, location, diet and interesting facts. We used websites such as AZ Animals, DK Findout, Newsela and Ducksters to gather information about our chosen animals.

It was lashing rain all day yesterday so we didn’t get outside for our breaks. We did a Joe Wicks workout in our classroom instead!
our last football match
Well done to all of the boys and girls who played football in Sciath na Scol this year. Today we played our final matches in Ballynoe against Knockraha. We are looking forward to starting hurling after Christmas.

We have been learning all about Neil Armstrong. We worked hard this week writing recount stories pretending to be Neil Armstrong and writing about his trip to the moon. Today we completed our final drafts- we even got to add some Space stickers!!

This week 5th class have been learning all about ‘averages’ in maths. In pairs, the children took turns rolling a die six times. They had to add up all of their totals and divide by six to find the average. We love doing hands on activities in maths!

We celebrated international dot day by listening to the story ‘The Dot’ by Peter H Reynolds. This inspired us to create our own art pieces!

First, everyone randomly selected a country. Then, we did mini fact files on those countries and designed the 2023 jerseys. We used the chromebooks to research information about the countries such as their capital cities, populations, currencies and other interesting facts. We also had a Rugby World Cup quiz. 5th class knew so much about the Rugby World Cup!!

In 5th class this week we had a chat about our prayers for the new school year. We then created our own back to school prayers which can be seen in Our Holy Space.
